As a spirited person I love people and like enhancing their quality of life. My body chronically deals with a variety of debilitating problems. Medical gaslighting has become my concern. I am committed to sharing my story to give other patients the courage, strength and vocabulary to speak up. I believe this will lead to improved communications between patients and professionals, and deeper understanding among the community at large.
As soon as I finished secondary school, I left behind my Belgian family and friends and moved to the UK. I graduated as a bachelor in occupational therapy and obtained a postgraduate certificate in health research. Misdiagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome for 20 years, I had to rely on the health service I worked in. It let me down badly and took me to death's door. Once other causes were identified, appropriate treatment made my issues more manageable. Suddenly I gained respect and care.
Despite disappointment in the health and social systems in both countries, I lead a happy life. My husband, our teenage son and I live in a beautiful rural area in Belgium. At 51 I enjoy gentle walks, crafting and of course reading and writing.
May I, and my book, provide the solid support I have always been fortunate to find.
